2008- Chesapeake Celtic Festival

Study for illustration of Saint Patrick for book Saints Preserve Us, to be released October 2008. Copyright Jeanne du Nord.

Saint Patrick was born about 385 near what is today the Welsh-Scottish border. His name was Gaewyn. When he was about sixteen, he was captured by Irish pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave to tend sheep.
In those days, Ireland was very rural with little communication. Lawless free-booters defied the ancient Celtic Brehon law and even the Celtic faith that venerated the triple spiral, already an ancient symbol by this time.

Patrick escaped slavery when he was about 22 years old and went to France. He became a monk, assumed the name Padraig, and then returned to Ireland to teach Christianity and the importance of living a just and orderly life. He used the shamrock as a reminder of the triple spiral, the belief in eternal life, and The Trinity.

Oh! Me mother and father are Irish
We're Irish through and through
We keep the pig in the parlor
'Cause the pig is Irish too!

Visit this website as planning for the festival continues.

Mr. John English of Spearfish, SD gives us an excellent venue for extolling the virtues of the Irish:

Hello,
As an Irishman who moved to the US thirty years ago, I'd like to thank you so much for the stereotyped Irishman with a pig in the parlor. The Irish are the most educated nation on earth, with three times as many advanced degrees per capita as the US. Ireland also has the second highest per capita income on the planet, and an enormous history of accomplishment and contribution. We have produced a literary heritage second to none (Swift, Joyce, Shaw to name a few), and have had more influence on American culture than any other single nation. More people claim Irish heritage than even those who claim British or German ancestry. This is especially telling when one remembers that any one of the twenty-three largest cities in the US has a larger population than the entire Irish island.

But if you folks want to ridicule our culture, contributions and intellect, and present us as a nation of illiterate boors who keep pigs in the parlor (an American word, by the way), go ahead.
I'll shop elsewhere.

Dear John English,

We thank you for sending the statistics about the Irish and this will give us a good venue for posting them on the Celtic Festival website. As producers of the Chesapeake Celtic Festival, we go to each of the Celtic countries regularly, especially Ireland where we feel quite at home (especially in Doolin). Like you, we love Ireland and the Irish.

Actress Cheryl Blackman, who played a leprechaun at last year's festival, (she played Miss Piggy in the Muppet movie) will again portray the leprechaun, this time with a pet piggy. At the end of the production number, that pig will fly.

If there seemed to you any pejorative connotation in the rhyme, here's the joke - in order to get that little piggy to be comfortable performing, he is going to have to bond to me and he's going to be spending some time right here in our 'parlor'.

Best wishes,

Jeanne du Nord

Special Highlight- CEILIDH! A special event of informal music, song, dance, story telling, and revelry. Ceilidh comes from an old Gaelic word for visit or companions. It is a good word to describe the ‘hale fellow well met’ spirit that encourages each other to sing a song, do a jig, or tell a joke.

The Festival welcomes back several familiar acts that guests have come to expect and also adds a new lineup of venues to keep the Festival fresh and lively.

  • The CORDOROY ROAD connects all of the sites at Furnace Town.
    Furnace Town is handicapped accessible.
  • Bird Of Rare Plumage dramatic tale written and told in the old bardic tradition.
  • Wine Tasting of Celtic inspired wines produced in Maryland.
  • Medieval European Martial Arts Guild Under the direction of Cory Winslow, The Guild focuses attention on historical accuracy and will offer free lessons to the public, as well as giving sparring and cutting demonstrations.

ON STAGE -There is continuous entertainment on the Festival Stage, The Ceilidh Stage, and in the Pub Tent and in several other locations around the Festival grounds.

  • SEAMUS O’REILLY, Master of Ceremonies, announces the events and performs as the Irish Pub Comic.
  • IONA is a unique acoustic weave of the traditional music of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany (France), Isle of Man, Asturias and Galicia (Spain) and our own American Celtic cultures, blended into a stunningly rich tapestry of vocals, instrumentation, and dance. Visit IONA at www.ionamusic.com
  • MOCH PRYDERI, (Welsh for Pryderi's Pig) perform the exciting and haunting music of Wales with occasional excursions into the other Celtic nations of Brittany, Galicia, Cornwall, Ireland, and Scotland. Among Moch Pryderi's exotic instruments are Breton bombardes, pidgorn, uillean pipes, Celtic bouzouki, small pipes, bodhran, dumbek, Welsh biwbo, highland pipes, whistles, flute, fiddle, guitar, and harp. They can be seen and heard at www.mochpryderi.com
  • KELLY CRENSHAW, whose Gaelic vocals earned accolades at past festivals, will be joined by the Clan of Man Celtic Dancers. In July 2006, the kids of the Clan of Man Celtic Dancers received the North American Youth Manx Award. Awarded by the Isle of Man Department of Education and presented by the North American Manx Association at their annual meeting in San Francisco, this award recognizes those young people who best promote Manx culture throughout North America. The Clan of Man Celtic Dancers received the trophy at an October 22 presentation ceremony with the president of the Washington Area Manx Society on hand to present the award.

  • COSTUMED ARTISANS from the Furnace Town Living History staff will demonstrate their crafts.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS -
Half hour Celtic Humanities Presentations in the Chapel have been very popular and they will continue this year with series of new half-hour discussions:

  • 1:30 Writer Jeanne du Nord will tell a new tale created in the tradition of ancient Celtic myths. Lance Corporal Chad Clifton
2nd Battalion 5th Regiment, USMC.

He was 19 years old when he was killed in action in Ramadi, Iraq. His mother remembers -
The Warrior and The Bard
Chad was born a Celtic Warrior...it was in him from the beginning. He felt strongly that there needed to be those in every generation who were 'willing to stand up.' He and his younger brother were raised to live fully and joyously and to feel the seasons turn within and without. We looked forward each year to the festival as a family event, especially the music. Years ago, we all four bought rune necklaces there and they were our individual symbols. Chad's was of course the Warrior rune. We still have it. His brother Ryan had the Protection rune and wore it non-stop...until the day he placed it in Chad's flag draped coffin. Chad was the most fully alive person I've ever met. His only fear was being forgotten...which led to a promise from me to tell his story if he didn't make it back.

The book is called A Random Soldier and will be available at the festival.
